Name: Montgomery "Scotty" Scott
Canon: Star Trek reboot
Original or Alternate Universe: OU
Canon Point: Post movie
Number: RGN me

Setting: Memory alpha link!
History: Scotty was born in/near Aberdeen,Scotland, Earth, in the year 2222 (his birth happened before the timeline shift caused by Nero and his crew traveling back in time, and therefore is presumably unaffected). Sticking with the idea that Scotty’s life was not significantly altered before a few years before the start of the movie, Scotty joined Starfleet in 2241 and embarked on his career in engineering. He became an aide in Admiral Archer's Advanced Relativistic Mechanics course while in the Academy and graduate first in his class. This distinction, sadly, was revoked following disciplinary actions. He spent several years as a Starfleet engineer in active duty the, sometime around 2256-7, engaged in a debate about transwarp beaming capabilities with his old instructor, Admiral Archer, which ended in Scotty beaming the Admiral’s prized pet beagle in order to prove a point. The beagle has yet to be found.

Though presumably officially for other reasons, Scotty is convinced it was punishment for this stunt that got him kicked off space travel and landed him a job as the ‘chief’ (very relative statement, when there’s only two people there) engineer at the Federation outpost on Delta Vega. It was there in 2258 that he met Spock (from the future) and the one-day-to-be-Captain Kirk when they stumbled in from the freezing cold. After being told the equation that he would one day invent by the time-traveling Spock for transwarp beaming, Scotty was able to perform the calculations that allowed him and Kirk to beam from the outpost to the moving starship Enterprise. Granted, he accidentally beamed himself into a tube filled with water, but given that beaming on to any part of a starship going at warp speed had been impossible before that very moment, we’ll call it good.

Scotty rather suddenly becomes a critical player in Kirk’s quest to stop Nero (the chief antagonist of the series, a time traveling angry romulan with apparently poor planning skills who had come back to torture one lone vulcan by committing attempted genocide against the Vulcan race), actually saving the Enterprise from being sucked into a black hole by coming up with and executing the idea of ejecting the warp core and detonating it, then riding the resulting force to safety. The ship’s chief engineer died at some point during the encounter and, supported by Kirk, Scotty becomes the new chief engineer of the ship before it’s next voyage. With, it should be noted, his sidekick from the Delta Vega outpost at his side.

Personality:

The circumstances in which we first meet Scotty are a fairly good insight into his overall personality. Determined to show his instructor- who, it must be noted, was nothing less than an Admiral of Starfleet- that he was correct in a theoretical physics argument, rather than playing safe and trying to prove it through math or experimenting on a mouse, Scotty went all out and attempted to prove his point using the Admiral’s prized pet. This, as anyone but Scotty could have guessed, did not end well for the man. This situation displays several key traits of Scotty’s personality: recklessness, ingenuity, stubbornness, and a deep enthusiasm for his work.

Scotty suffers somewhat from the fact that he knows he is, at any given time, very likely one of, if not the, smartest people in the room (at least when it comes to his area of expertise). He doesn’t brag or have an overinflated ego that causes him to look down on others for this, but rather this supreme confidence in his own abilities ends up with him taking occasionally wild risks because he’s just so sure he’s right. This confidence and his extreme excitement and enthusiasm for engineering can interact with each other in a positive feedback loop, leading to him pushing the very boundaries of known science, then going into fits of disbelieving laughter when it actually works...with this then leading to him pressing his capabilities even further. Basically, without commanding officers with a nice, firm grip in reality to support him, this Scotty could have the potential to take the mad scientist hobby up.

This reckless faith in abilities tends to extend to those he works with, as well. If someone says they can do something (so long as it’s not related to Scotty’s line of work and Scotty thinks it can’t be done), Scotty is inclined to let them give it a go. This may be a result of his own annoyance at people doubting his claims. Whatever the whole of the source, even if Scotty houses deep doubts on whether someone will be able to pull something off or horribly kill them all, he won’t voice them- may, in fact, lend his support to the plan if somewhere in it he gets to do something exciting with engineering. Scotty was shocked, for example, that Sulu managed to pilot them correctly through Saturn’s rings, but initially supported the mad plan anyway. In short, Scotty expects people to put a lot of trust into his talents, and in return he happily grants the same opportunity for people to try (if not exactly real faith they’ll succeed) with their talents.

With all this enthusiasm for physics and engineering, one might be tempted to imagine Scotty as a ‘traditional’ math nerd, awkward social skills and all. Rather, Scotty is a boisterous, easy-going individual with an extremely sarcastic sense of humor. While he may see the punishments he receives for his little explorations into theoretical physics as tragically unfair, Scotty still isn’t one to fall into depression or despair. Rather, he rolls with the punches life throws at him with only a sarcastic comment or two along the way. Even when he nearly drowns on the Enterprise due to an awkward bit of beaming, he doesn’t focus on the fact he almost died, waving off Kirk with a simple ‘I’m soaking, but fine.’ This habit to give ‘Mystery Science Theater’ like commentary on life rather than get upset or freak out comes into play when he first meets future!Spock, choosing to give sarcastic comments on whether the future has sandwiches rather than raising a stink over the fact the man claimed to be from the future. Essentially, Scotty doesn’t waste a lot of time fretting about the bad parts of his life. Better to be sardonically amused than actually upset, even when his life is in danger or he has no clue what is happening around him or why.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Scotty is a one of, if not the, best engineers in Starfleet. His ways of thinking about the technology associated with transwarp beaming and faster than light travel are out of the box and, often, a little ahead of their time. In short, he’s got an incredible understanding of technology and will likely have little trouble learning the ins and outs of an alien vessel.

Scotty also has general Starfleet training. True, Starfleet is more a paramilitary operation than anything, but certain physical requirements are still in place. Scotty isn’t as in shape as Kirk or Spock, but he can at least endure some physical hardship. Otherwise, he’s just a totally normal, squishy human with no supernatural abilities or the like.

Inventory: His Starfleet combadge, phaser, and red engineering uniform.
Appearance: Scotty is Simon Pegg. A white male, somewhat more pudgy than you may expect in a Starfleet officer, but not exactly out of shape.
Age: 36

Log Sample:
He'd toweled off and shimmed back into his uniform- slightly more snug of a venture than he'd prefer, given his still damp state. Nothing like a good communal nudity session to wake up the senses. A good thing that haunting the pubs as a lad had beaten down that nasty little emotion called ‘shame’ to a level even a Vulcan would be proud of. If they were allowed to have the pride thing- seemed they should. Less an emotion and more a state of being. He’d have to press Spock about it next time he needed a laugh.

Scotty wrapped the towel around his shoulders as he ventured out of the arrival area towards what common sense dictated must be the lift. Seemed in Scotty's experience that the thin piece of fabric came more in handy aboard ships than near any piece of actual Starfleet issued equipment. Particularly when it came to tubes and the escape from thereof. And wasn’t that just his life now? More tubes. Test one experimental piece of physics on a pup and suddenly his life was made of tubes and cold. Bloody cruel and unusual, that’s what it was.

And now empty corridors. He may have showered just a touch too fast. Creepy. He stuck his head out, damp hair sticking up at every angle as he looked left then right. Down long, echoing halls that seemed to stretch out forever.

Aye. Creepy.

I like this ship.

[The wonder in Scotty’s voice is just bordering on flat out giddiness. He’s in motion, the comm in full shaky cam mode a he walks along the catwalk of- if anyone can tell from the glimpses behind him- the reactor bay.]

Charming lady- and she’s got her priorities straight. Such a rarity in a true beauty. Bloomin’ huge! Just how I like them. Something a man can really get a grip on, you know? Worlds better than those skins and bones lassies the holovids love to show. Bah. Cold fusion, too. Brilliant. A bit unorthodox, but hell. I’ll try anything once, eh? Can’t fault adventurous tastes. I-

[And the transmission is suddenly ended as Scotty’s eye is caught by a wall of tools. There’s an almost manic laugh as he skedaddles over there, whatever deep insight he’d come to talk about utterly forgotten. ]
